NIL and College Sports: How We Got Here, and Where We’re Going
Moderated by Eric Belvins (L ’11)

College athletics is in the midst of a historic transformation, spurred by state laws permitting college athletes to earn money from their name, image, and likeness rights- NIL. This panel will briefly examine the forces that led to this era of change, then focus on the practical implications of NIL in today’s college sports world. How are college athletes capitalizing on their NIL rights, what do these deals look like, how are schools approaching NIL, and how is college athletes’ use of their NIL both similar and different from pro athletes? Finally, the panel will share some possible paths forward, and what the college sports landscape might look like in the coming years.

Location: Weinmann Hall
Time: 12:15 PM – 1:15 PM

Children’s Legal Needs and the Impact of the Lutz Family Public Interest Fellowship
Featuring Kirby Casciato (L ’18), Kellie Jackson (L ‘24), Laurel Sheridan (L ’20), and Josephine Vanderhorst (L ‘15); Moderated by Jessica Wood Williams (L ’14)

In 2013, Laurent (L’86) and Marcia Lutz endowed a fellowship to provide opportunities for Tulane Law graduates to enter public interest legal positions focused on the needs of those among us who can least advocate for themselves – children.  Since the Fellowship’s founding, 28 Tulane Law graduates have served as Lutz Fellows in 7 different organizations throughout the greater New Orleans and Baton Rouge areas, and in doing so have helped thousands of children and families.  As Tulane Law School doubles down on its commitment to public interest opportunities for students and graduates, this panel of former Lutz Fellows will discuss some of the specific legal needs of children experiencing abuse, fallout from domestic violence, complications of immigration status and challenges of insufficient disability accommodations – and the inspiring work Tulane lawyers do to ensure children are both seen and heard.
