Outreach Tulane: alumni edition
Tulane’s enduring motto, “Not for one’s self, but for one’s own,” remains vibrant, not just on campus but in the hearts of its graduates.
Inspired by the cherished Outreach Tulane student-service day, Tulane Alumni has unveiled a service initiative tailored specifically for its alumni network.
“At Tulane, our commitment to service is a lifelong endeavor,” says Amanda Duhon, senior associate director for global programs. “Our new Outreach Tulane initiative is designed to act as a bridge, connecting our alumni’s passion for public service with meaningful opportunities, no matter where life takes them post-graduation.”
Across the nation, Tulane alumni clubs are rallying to this cause, hosting service events to continue the tradition of giving back.
Annelise Haskell (A ’14), president of the Tulane Club of Washington, D.C., said the call to give back is deeply ingrained in Tulanians and shared by many of her peers.
“Reflecting back on my initial interest in Tulane and decision to apply, I was immediately drawn to the service-learning curriculum, and I think many members of our D.C. board felt like giving back was also an important part of their experience at Tulane. When we were talking about alumni programming for the year, people had lots of ideas for service events in our D.C. area."
The Tulane Club of Washington, D.C., showcased its commitment to community service with two Outreach Tulane events, a family-friendly service day for volunteers to remove invasive plants from Rock Creek Park and serving breakfast at Thrive DC, an institution that aids the city’s homeless population.
However, according to Haskell, these two events merely serve as a “kickoff for the many philanthropic events we hope to have over the next year. There was a strong interest in community service programming for the upcoming year.”
Haskell credited two fellow alumni, Fiona Xhu (B *14) and Tanya Brown (SW *20) with being instrumental in organizing the service events.
The D.C. Club is participating in the Wreaths Across America program in December, a tribute to veterans at Arlington National Cemetery. They also have plans to assist at a food pantry during Christmas week and will be organizing a toiletries drive for Thrive DC during their holiday party.
