Social Media for Clubs

There are two types of social media outlets:

  • Tulane Alumni Association-owned social media channels including: Facebook, Instagram, X and LinkedIn
  • Club-managed events, such as the Tulane Club of NYC

Social media pages managed by club volunteers should be used within the set parameters as determined by their leadership. While some clubs like to use their channels strictly as club event pages that promote TAA and club events, others may choose to broaden their approach by including an allowance for Tulane Alumni communication on their social pages. It is up to each club to decide what works best for them.

Social Media Policies

Creating Accounts

Existing Club Accounts

  • Most clubs have social pages and groups set up across a variety of channels. Contact your staff liaison before creating a new social media account. An OAR staff member or the Tulane Alumni Clubs Page should be administrator of all accounts. This ensures your club manager can help add new admins as club leadership changes.
  • All club social pages and groups should include club leadership AND a member of the OAR staff as administrators. Staff will not post or manage the account. They are included to help monitor posts and to help troubleshoot if necessary.

New Club Accounts

  • The Office of Alumni Relations encourages volunteers to create club social media accounts across platforms that they are comfortable managing. Facebook, Instagram, and LinkedIn are all encouraged platforms to use.
  • When creating a new account, OAR asks that the club leader invite their staff liaison to be an administrator for the account. Staff will not post or manage the account. They are included to help monitor posts and to help troubleshoot if necessary.

Standardized Naming/Branding

  • When creating a new group or page, keep the naming of your club consistent with other clubs. This makes it easier for club members to find your group or page on social media channels.
  • Naming your social media accounts:
    • Facebook: Tulane Alumni Club of CITY/REGION (or abbreviation of the region’s name)
    • Instagram: TulaneClubCITY (i.e. TulaneClubNYC or TulaneClubCharleston or TulaneClubChi)

Club Events on Social Media

  • Common Events (Happy Hours, Lectures, Cultural Events, Watch Parties, etc.)
The OAR encourages club leaders to create Facebook Event Pages for each of their events. Link these event pages to the Registration page created by Advancement Communications and Marketing. Your staff liaison should let you know when the page is ready and will provide the link so that you can include it in the “About” text field. Having this event in social media allows club leaders to promote their event as frequently as they’d like to for the members of their social media groups.
  • Signature Events
The OAR encourages club leaders to create Facebook Event Pages for signature events - Welcome TU, Mardi Gras, Outreach Tulane, and Crawfish Boils. Link these event pages to the Registration page created by Advancement Communications and Marketing. Your staff liaison should let you know when the page is ready and will provide the link so that you can include it in the “About” text field.
